Fundraisers
Scholastic Book Fair
This year the Parent Booster Club voted to hold two Scholastic Book Fairs, one in
the fall during the week of November 12-16 and another in the spring at a date to
be announced. (The spring Book Fair will replace the previously scheduled See's
Candy Fundraiser).
Last year's Book Fair was very successful and enjoyable. A bookstore is set up in
the Activities Room for one week where students and parents can purchase brand new
books at all reading levels at reduced prices. Delphi Academy gets a percentage
of each of the sales.
Students tour the store for a preview with their classes and the bookstore is open
every afternoon after school for families to browse and buy. It's a great place
to purchase holiday or birthday gifts or simply to build onto a home library.
Delphi Auction & Art Gala
Plan to attend our fabulous Delphi Auction & Art Gala on Saturday, December
1st! The Booster Club is gathering a wide selection of special items to auction
and student art will also be on display and for sale. It's an elegant evening for
the whole family, with hors d'oeuvres and friends. Naturally, all proceeds go to
Delphi Academy to help upgrade school facilities.
Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Night
Thursday, January 24, 2008 is the date of our Chuck E. Cheese Pizza Night for all
Delphi students! Chuck E. Cheese himself is scheduled to be at the school reminding
everyone to head over to Chuck E. Cheese Pizza parlour on Stevens Creek Boulevard
(near the Valco mall) for an evening of pizza, games and fun! Students win Chuck
E. Cheese awards during the weeks prior to this event for good attendance and other
categories set by the teachers. Every student also gets a certain number of free
tokens and a fun evening with friends that also benefits Delphi Academy!
Father-Daughter/Mother-Son All School Dance
Februrary 23, 2008 is a Saturday you will want to reserve for Delphi's school dance!
Put on your dancing shoes and come shake a leg to a variety of music. It is an event
for all ages and the Delphi Student Council will have refreshments for sale. All
proceeds go to our school, so get down and boogie!
Bike-a-thon at Shoreline Park – Save the date! May 3, 2008 from
9:00 am – noon
Every spring the Delphi Academy Bike-a-thon is a fun social event at Shoreline Park
with families riding marked circuits on large, safe paths in a beautiful setting.
Students collect pledges beforehand (either per mile or simply a straight donation)
and then gather to bike the routes with their friends.
Delphi Academy staff are stationed along the routes to encourage the riders and
supervise the event. Snacks, drinks, bike repair and first aid are also always available
at the start/finish line. Parents are welcome to bike, jog, rollerblade, walk or
scoot along with their children and enjoy the fresh air and exercise. Sometimes
parents will even bring guitars and provide entertainment!
This is usually the final fundraiser of the school year and one that everyone looks
forward to.
eScrip – Support Delphi Academy through your everyday purchases!
eScrip is a hassle-free way for schools to raise funds through everyday purchases
made at eScrip merchants.
Simply register your grocery club, Macy's, credit, debit and ATM cards at
www.escrip.com by clicking on "Sign Up" and then choosing Delphi Academy
to receive contributions.
Delphi Academy's Group ID # is 500004862.
Enter in each of your cards on their secure site and after that, you're set! Every
time you shop at a participating eScrip merchant, a percentage of your purchases
will be donated to our school. If every parent signs up, these percentages will
add up to a significant amount for Delphi Academy each year.
Safeway, Office Max, Macy's, Whole Foods and Linens & Things are just some of
the stores that will give back 1-6% of your purchase to Delphi Academy. A full list
of participating merchants in Northern California can be seen in this pdf file.
We also encourage you to tell your family and friends about this opportunity. Every
person signed up makes a difference!
Electronic Recycling – The fundraiser that's environmentally friendly!
In January 2006 it became illegal to dump electronic equipment in California. All
computers, monitors, televisions, microwaves, telephones, etc. must be properly
recycled.
Delphi Academy has teamed up with San Jose-based recycling company ASL to provide
an easy way to recycle your old equipment and support our school at the same time!
Simply take your old electronic equipment to
ASL at 524 Brennan Street in San Jose and mention "Delphi Academy"
for credit of your donation to our account. We are paid by the pound for the electronic
waste you donate. TVs and Monitors pay the highest per pound (10 cents), CPUs pay
5 cents/pound and the rest gives us 2 cents/pound. It may not seem like much, but
if every family donates their old waste, it does add up over the year.
Additionally, businesses can donate and anyone who has a large amount can call to
arrange FREE pick up! Remember to mention "Delphi Academy" for credit when you call:
1-877-279-0230.
If you don't have time to drive your recycling to ASL, hang on to those electronic
items and stay tuned for Delphi's upcoming Electronic Recycling Drive that will
happen during the school year.
The following are accepted for donation by ASL:

Fundraising Projects
Do you have a great idea for a fundraiser? While we do not want to overwhelm families
with constant fundraising, we are always open to new ideas. For example, Delphi
parent Ed Hackett suggested he put his DJ skills to work so we could hold the first
ever Delphi Parent and Child School Dance. Great idea!
If you have a special talent, interest or line of work that you would like to utilize
to create a new fundraising opportunity for Delphi, please stop by the office and
talk to Ingrid. Or send her an e-mail at ingridv@delphi-sfb.org.
Creating Community Service Opportunities
Many of our parents are involved in their communities, helping in a variety of ways
to improve our society. At Delphi, we like to give our students the opportunity
to give back to their community and gain an understanding of the difference they
can make.
Our students have collected food each Thanksgiving for Second Harvest food bank,
held a "Change for Change" drive to raise money for the Red Cross to provide aid
to Hurricane Katrina victims, performed at local homes for the elderly, and gathered
school supplies to send to impoverished students in Zimbabwe.
Perhaps you are involved in your community in a way that Delphi students could also
participate. If you would like to help our students help others, talk to Kimi in
the office or send her an e-mail with your idea at
administration@delphi-sfb.org.
Hot Lunch Servers
Delphi has a new Hot Lunch Program! Parents and students are enjoying the ease of
having a hot lunch every afternoon. We could use volunteers to come help serve the
hot lunches from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm each school day. If you can offer your
time (in any amount) your help will be greatly appreciated. Please see Maria in
the office to sign up, or send her an e-mail at
mariaa1@delphi-sfb.org with the dates you are available.
Cultural Celebrations
Students at Delphi Academy come from many diverse backgrounds. We like to celebrate
cultural events so that all students can learn about and experience each other's
cultures and learn about other countries. If there is a cultural celebration that
you would like to share with your child's class, please talk to your child's teacher.
If you would like to share an event with the whole school, please see Kimi in the
office or send her an e-mail to coordinate and organize your celebration into our
calendar. It is best if these events are planned more than a month in advance for
optimum results.
For the month of October, we can use help with Diwali on October 19th
and the Halloween Carnival on October 27th. Much preparation goes into
these events beforehand, so all helping hands are welcome!
After-School Activities
The new schedule at Delphi Academy creates an Afternoon Activities slot from 4:15
– 5:15 pm, Monday through Thursday. Every six weeks, new activities are offered.
If you have a class you would like to offer as an Afternoon Activity, we would love
to hear from you. The commitment would be for that one-hour slot each Monday through
Thursday of that period. In the past, parents have taught Hindi Language, Hindi
Literature and knitting.
Delphi Academy additionally offers Study Hall, Playground Skills (for Beginners)
and Yearbook (for Form 5 only), and a variety of other electives such as Art or
Theater. In the past, students have also enjoyed robotics, martial arts, Chess Club,
dance and crafts. To get more information or to sign up, please send an e-mail
with your proposal to Susan at susanw@delphi-sfb.org
Field Trip Chaperones
Weekly field trips are an important part of the Delphi curriculum. Parents are always
welcome to come along and join us! See your child's teacher if you'd like to attend!
More!
Lots of excellent communication between faculty, students and parents is a hallmark
of Delphi Academy. If you have ideas or ways you'd like to help the school, please
talk to your child's teacher or write your idea down and drop it off in the Idea
Basket in the office. We will route it from there to the correct faculty member.
Every parent is a vital member of our school community. We welcome your thoughts!
Donations
Do you work at HP?
For every computer that an HP employee donates to a non-profit organization or school
such as Delphi Academy, HP will cover 75% of the cost of that donation. As we intend
to upgrade all the computers in the school, especially the classroom computers,
this discount would be quite helpful.
Stop by the office and see Travis or send him an e-mail at
travisp@delphi-sfb.org if you are an HP employee and could help us out.
We encourage everyone to check out their own company's policies towards giving and
donations. If your company has a program from which Delphi Academy students could
benefit, we want to know about it!
Company Matching
When an employee decides to make a donation to a non-profit organization or school,
many companies offer to match that amount with their own donation, effectively doubling the gift! If you are considering a donation to
Delphi Academy, it may be highly beneficial to check out the policy on giving in
your own workplace. Our students will thank you!
Grant Writing
Whether you have experience in seeking out and writing grants or are simply interested
in doing so, any contributions in this area will be appreciated. See Kimi in the
office or e-mail her for more
information.
School Site Upgrades
We'd like to thank the Fakhouri family for their donations of time, materials and
labor to upgrade both the boys' and girls' bathrooms, for improving our front yard
and walkway by building the wooden fence and for all the new plantings they installed.
It looks great and created the perfect setting for the new Beginners playground.
A late thank you also to Carlos Calderon for fixing the faucet in the classroom
that now holds Form 4. He noticed it wasn't working properly, bought the materials
to fix it and did the repair after school one day.
If you have skills you'd like to donate to Delphi, your help is always appreciated!
Any projects you're interested in taking on should be coordinated with Ingrid in
the office or send an e-mail letting
her know what you'd like to do.
We also always ask for volunteers to come one weekend with wheelbarrows when we
refill the sandboxes and tanbark in the play areas. Kids are welcome to help, too!
Keep an eye on the calendar for the date of this event if you'd like to help.
Your Ideas
Although we try to think of everything, often times the best ideas come from parents
who like to be involved in their child's school. If there's something you'd like
to donate to Delphi Academy, drop us a line in the Idea Basket in the office. We
look forward to hearing from you!
